The Visiting Lecturer

He came -
His name
A careful mixture
Of the demotic
And Germanic,
An ordinary Joe
But with white coat
And half-moons
So he catches you either way -
He came to share
The riches of his studies,
Pillared
With solid shibboleths
That no sceptic or apostate
Could unpick or deny.
Pathway, regimen,
Disease control
And protocol,
Clinical this
And treatment that.
The charts declared proof
Of his modern wisdom,
We nodded,
Scribbled notes.
“Must take that back to so-and-so”,
Spread the word and share the glory –
The charlatan’s schtick,
Just like any other story.
